    Salary: $40,000

    The primary focus of the Community Engagement and Education Specialist is to co-administer the community engagement and education aspects of Bike Utah’s Community Assistance Program (CAP). This program seeks to support Utah communities by facilitating the five elements of successful cycling communities: complete cycling infrastructure, access to gear and maintenance, education and information, thriving cycling community, and inclusive planning and policy.

    Bike Utah’s community engagement and education efforts focus on providing cycling safety education and resources to schools, drivers, and community groups within the state. At schools, this can look like teaching bike safety to elementary school students through classes and assemblies, supporting bike buses, engaging the school community in conversations on safe routes to school, developing curricula, and more. In communities, this can look like engaging underserved communities to provide bike repair days, teaching bike safety, developing new projects, and more. A good candidate does not need to be a bike expert; Bike Utah will train on cycling safety education and simple bike mechanical skills.

    This role can be implemented as either a ¾ time or full time role depending on the desire of the applicant. A ¾ time role would focus on community engagement and education. A full time role would also include supporting other efforts within Bike Utah according to staff interests and organizational needs. These efforts include development, advocacy, active transportation planning, and event planning.

    Community Engagement & Education Specialist Core Roles and Responsibilities:

    • Teach bicycle and safety skills.
    • Create, map, and lead regular community rides while ensuring participant safety.
    • Support bike repair day events.
    • Develop bike safety education content.
    • Maintain accurate and timely records of program implementation and metrics.
    • Maintain bikes and equipment used for Bike Utah programs.
    • Travel the state of Utah in a 35’ box truck.
    • Generate ideas and opportunities for partnerships and projects related to CAP.
    • Build relationships with community partners to generate interest in and exposure of programs (e.g. local bike shops, media, local government, etc.).

    Additional Responsibilities for a Full Time Role:

    • Administer Mid Week MTB Series planning and execution tasks as needed.
    • Manage volunteers across projects.
    • Support internal and community partner grant writing efforts.
    • Perform other related duties as requested.

    Required Position Qualifications:

    • Loves to work with kids and people of all ages and walks of life.
    • Passion for cycling and the ability to spread that passion to others.
    • Enjoys working outdoors and is willing to work in all weather conditions.
    • Ability to ride a bike at an easy pace for at least 10 miles in one day.
    • Ability to lift 30 lbs. repeatedly.
    • Holds a valid Utah driver’s license and has a good driving record (no DUI’s in the last 5 years and no more than 2 moving violations in the last 3 years).
    • Due to the nature of the people we serve, Federal and State laws require a criminal background review and a Motor Vehicle Record inquiry. Persons possessing a criminal record will still be considered.
    • Able to travel within Utah (outside Wasatch front region) 1-3 times per quarter (typically Sunday through Thursday).
    • Able to drive a 35-foot box truck. Training will be provided. CDL not required.

    Considered Position Qualifications:

    • Experience in program facilitation or teaching.Comfort with public speaking.
    • Bicycle maintenance and repair experience is a plus.
    • Cross-cultural competency and sensitivity/comfort working with underserved populations.
    • English/Spanish bilingualism.
    • Strong organizational skills and the ability to juggle numerous responsibilities, including competency with Google Drive (Docs, Sheets, Calendar, Forms).
    • Live within a 45 mile radius of Bike Utah headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah.
    • Experience working with community partners and managing relationships.
