Trips for Kids Seeks Executive Director for International Programs

New position will strengthen Trips for Kids’ international presence, allowing the organization to serve thousands more deserving kids around the world

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – July 20, 2010 – Trips for Kids (TFK) has created a new executive director position to oversee its international programming and develop its strategic alliances on an international level, and is seeking qualified candidates.

“We have come a long way as an organization since our inception in 1988. Our dream is that one day Trips for Kids will be as large as The Boys and Girls Clubs of America,” said Marilyn Price, Trips for Kids founding director. “We are looking forward to bringing on an international executive director that will take our mission to the next level.”

The new TFK international executive director will be responsible for increasing the number of TFK chapters in the United States and overseas, generating program funding, expanding ties with international bicycling and recreational industries, forming critical alliances with other national youth organizations and increasing public awareness of Trips for Kids’ programs to get more low-income, at-risk children on mountain bike rides.

Qualified candidates should submit their cover letters and resumes to Shaugn Stanley, lead advisor and TFK Marin board member, at [email protected]. No telephone inquiries please.

TFK is an international non-profit organization that takes underserved youth on mountain bike adventures, teaching them personal responsibility, achievement and environmental awareness. There are now 69 chapters in the United States, Canada and Israel. More than 65,000 disadvantaged young people have participated in TFK’s day-long cycling adventures.

For more information on Trips for Kids, please visit www.tripsforkids.org or call Marilyn Price at 415.458.2986.

About Trips for Kids
Trips for Kids (www.tripsforkids.org) is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization based in Marin County, California. With 65-plus chapters operating in the United States, Canada and Israel, Trips for Kids opens the world of cycling to at-risk youth through mountain bike rides and Earn-A-Bike programs. Trips for Kids started in 1988 as a grass roots effort by avid mountain biker, environmentalist and Mountain Bike Hall of Fame inductee Marilyn Price to provide inner-city youth a way to enjoy the outdoors and gain much-needed life skills.

Fueled by success in the San Francisco Bay Area, the national organization was launched in 1999 with the expanded mission to open as many chapters as possible in order to provide kids with lessons in personal responsibility, achievement and environmental awareness through the development of practical skills and the simple act of having fun through mountain biking.

Fly V Australia Go One-Two at Wells Fargo Twilight Criterium
Clayton Barrows still leads the USA CRITS Series

Boise, ID – Nearly 100 of the best criterium riders in the country lined up for the 6th stop of the USA CRITS Series, the Wells Fargo Twilight Criterium. Ben Kersten of Fly V Australia picked up the win, while AXA Equitable holds onto his overall lead. Isaac Howe keeps the Maxxis Best Young Rider Jersey (as well as his 2nd place overall standing), while UnitedHealthcare’s Hilton Clarke still wears the Sportsbase Online Lap Leader Jersey.

The race was animated from the very beginning, with a slue of primes urging the riders to keep the pace high in the 90 minute race. Three breaks were able to get away (but not stay away). The first break probably had the best chance of sticking with five motivated riders in Daniel Ramsey (Williams Racing), Alexi Martinez (Adageo Energy), Luis Amaran (Jamis-Sutter Home presented by Colavita), Bernie Sulzberger (Fly V Australia), and Fabio Calabria (Team Type 1).

This break was reeled in but three riders launched off the front including Amaran, Andres Diaz (Team Exergy), and Ryan Parnes (Yahoo!). A nine-man chase group was able to catch on to the end of the breakaway but was ultimately brought back with about 30 minutes left in racing. A third break was established a few moments later, however, the 11-man group was caught within 10 laps to go.

The sprint had the major players lined up, with Fly V Australia taking most of the responsiblity of controlling the field and line up their fast men, Jonathan Cantwell and Ben Kersten. With 2 laps to go, Jamis-Sutter Home presented by Colavita took over the front, but it was Fly V Australia who took the top two spots. Anibal Borrajo (Jamis-Sutter Home) rounded out the top 3.

Wells Fargo Twilight Criterium Top 3
1. Ben Kersten (Fly V Australia)
2. Jonathan Cantwell (Fly V Australia)

SelectHealth Cyclists Raise More than $80,000 for American Diabetes Association

0

The numbers are in. As part of the American Diabetes Association’s annual Tour de Cure, SelectHealth and its team of cyclists have raised $84,712 for diabetes research and prevention—the second highest fundraising total in the nation.

Now in its fourth year of participating in the national cycling event, the SelectHealth team has grown to 255 riders, making it the largest single-site team in the country. The team is comprised of SelectHealth and Intermountain Healthcare employees, as well as community members from around the state.

“Many people participate in the Tour de Cure for the stimulating competition, camaraderie, and physical cycling challenge but SelectHealth takes this event to a whole new level as a sponsor, team, and volunteers,” said Sara Prevost, National Tour de Cure Associate Director. “They show the community what involvement should look like and it is inspiring to see their passion for the cause. The Tour de Cure in Utah wouldn’t be the same without SelectHealth.”

Team SelectHealth is already gearing up for next year’s ride, to be held June 11, 2011, in Brigham City.

For details about the tour, visit www.diabetes.org/utahtourdecure.

About Tour de Cure

Tour de Cure is a series of fundraising cycling events held in 43 states nationwide to benefit the American Diabetes Association. The Tour is a ride, not a race, with routes designed for everyone from the occasional rider to the experienced cyclist. Since Tour de Cure’s beginning in 1991, thousands of individual riders and teams have participated to support the American Diabetes Association’s mission to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.

Fundraiser for Utah Cyclist, Bunny Bradley

Dear Utah Cycling Community Friends,

It is with a heavy heart that I write you regarding our friend, Bunny
Bradley, who passed away early this morning after being hit while
riding her bike on Wednesday 7-14-10.

Bunny was a warm and energetic young woman – she was heavily involved
with the fitness community as a rec cyclist and a well-known fitness
instructor at XCEL Fitness Clubs. Impact Fitness Wear (Women’s
Fitness Apparel and Accessories Company based in Utah), along with
other local companies, is hosting a fundraiser on behalf of Bunny’s
family. The fundraiser will be hosted in Holladay, UT tomorrow 7-16-10
between the hours of 11am – 4pm. Address: 4564 S. Wallace Lane (2925
E.). There will be silent auctions, donations, and many other items
available — all proceeds will go directly to Bunny’s family. She
leaves behind 2 darling children and her husband.

We hope you will join us tomorrow in remembering Bunny and supporting
the Bradley’s family. If you wish to make a separate donation, a fund
has been set up at Zions Bank in Bunny Bradley’s name.

There is a write up below about Bunny from KSL.COM —
the link is also included below. If you have any questions about this
event, please contact Megan Adams at 801-273-7676 or [email protected]

All the best,
Megan Adams, Owner, IMPACT Fitness Wear

BMC Racing Team Will Compete At Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah

0

National road champion George Hincapie, and Salt Lake City native and
2008 Tour of Utah winner Jeff Louder to race

SALT LAKE CITY – July 12, 2010 – The 2010 Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah presented by Zions Bank is pleased to announce that the BMC Racing Team will participate in next month’s race with a squad of five-riders.

The squad will include three-time National Road Rhampion George Hincapie, Salt Lake City native and 2008 Tour of Utah winner Jeff Louder, and fellow Americans Chris Barton, Chris Butler and Swiss national Simon Zahner.

Hincapie went pro in 1994 and is recognized for riding on the team of eight Tour de France champions and for being the only rider to join Lance Armstrong in all seven of his victories from 1999-2005.

“I’m excited to be able to do another race in the U.S.,” said Hincapie. “From what Jeff and other racers have told me, The Tour of Utah is well organized and very demanding.”

Louder has been a pro-cyclist since 2000 and lives in Salt Lake City when he’s not racing overseas. Besides his win at the 2008 Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah, he also finished third overall at last year’s race, and has finished on the podium in several international races including the Tour de Beauce and the Tour of Qinghai Lake.

“I am very happy to be racing the Tour of Utah with BMC Racing,” said Louder. “As a Utah native, I am particularly motivated to do well and we are bringing a team that will be competing for the win.”

The Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah is a six-day, 300-mile plus professional bicycle road race along the Rocky Mountain’s Wasatch Range through some of Utah’s most beautiful and challenging terrain. Scheduled to take place next month, August 17-22, 2010, the Tour of Utah will attract 18 professional cycling teams totaling 144 cyclists competing for a cash/prize purse of $45,000.

More than 30,000 spectators are expected to line the racecourse and attend the festivals in Ogden, Park City, Provo, Salt Lake City and Tooele.

National News

Safe Routes to School Victory
Last week, House Republican Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) targeted the
federal Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program established under the
2005 Federal Surface Transportation Bill (SAFETEA-LU) as wasteful
government spending in his weekly “YouCut program”. He chooses five
programs that he deems wasteful and asks the public to vote on which
one should be cut first. Thanks to everyone who sent out alerts on
this, we got good results. The public voted, and SRTS was not chosen
as the most wasteful program. However, Cantor’s Press Secretary said
that biking and walking programs would be targeted in the future.

Learn more and speak up for Safe Routes to School today.

National Biking and Walking Study Update
The National Biking and Walking Study was first issued in 1994 with a
specific 69-point action plan. Fifteen years later it is updated
again. We are pleased that the study reports bicycle use and walking
went up from 8 percent to 12 percent of trips and that fatalities
involving the two modes are down 12 percent and 22 percent
respectfully since 1994. Read our blog to see what we would like to
happen next.

World News

Velo-City Global 2010
Velo-City Global 2010 starts today, June 22 and runs through June 25.
League staffers (who are very excited!), along with the event’s MC and
League President Andy Clarke, will be attending the event and learning
and sharing with cycling representatives from around the world. We
will be blogging throughout the conference. Keep up with Velo-City
news via the Bike League Blog.

Local News

Vancouver Wash.’s Bike Program Threatened
A few weeks ago we alerted you on Vancouver’s threatened Bike Program
funding. As a result, residents, business owners, bike club members
and advocates spoke out in favor of reinstating this funding at the
City Council’s hearing. League President Andy Clarke wrote Vancouver’s
Mayor Leavitt asking him to look into the matter and work to reinstate
the funding. Mayor Leavitt responded, “City transportation and budget
staff are presently scouring the budgets” to find funding for the bike
program, according to BikePortland.org.

While our message is being heard, we still need your help. The Bicycle
Transportation Alliance (BTA) recommends the following steps: 1. Write
or call City Council Members. 2. Attend the hearing at Council
Chambers today, June 21st at 7 p.m., and be prepared to deliver
testimony. 3. Ask for the $200,000 of currently uncommitted funding to
be dedicated to Vancouver’s bike program. 4. You can use the BTA’s
Advocacy Toolkit to help craft your message.

Black Hawk, Colo. Bans Bikes
Colorado is known for its bicycle-friendliness, boasting 11 Bicycle
Friendly Communities – including Platinum-level Boulder. However, the
town of Black Hawk, Colo. recently banned all bikes and is issuing
tickets to those “caught” riding a bicycle. Bicycle Colorado will be
holding a rally Tuesday, June 29 at Colorado’s state capitol. Get
details here.

Read our blog to find how you can take action now.

Unique Ciclovia
A few cities in the U.S., including League Bicycle Friendly
Communities Madison, Wis. and Washington, D.C., have organized more
traditional South American style ciclovia events. The events typically
occur on Saturday or Sunday on a city’s main streets. The main drag
becomes car-free and only open to pedestrians, bicyclists and skaters.
Ciclovias are a celebration of livable streets and communities,
encouraging citizens and businesses to get out in the street and enjoy
their city. Recently, Lexington, Ky. had a somewhat nontraditional
version of a ciclovia at the local airport’s brand new tarmac. Click

Tour de France, Stage 6: Looking Ahead

Gueugnon, France – 2010-07-09

Tour de France, Stage 6: Looking Ahead

Cadel Evans of the BMC Racing Team said his recovery from two long,
hot stages will determine what happens this weekend as the Tour de
France hits the mountains.

Evans Still Third Overall
Saturday’s 165-kilometer race features six climbs in the Alps. Evans
finished 22nd Friday as Mark Cavendish (HTC-Columbia) won his second
bunch sprint. “I’m quite tired, but tomorrow is a new race,” Evans
said. “Everything is going to start to change around tomorrow and
Sunday is going to be a real shuffle-up going into the Pyrenees.” The
world champion said Fabian Cancellara (Team Saxo Bank) might keep his
overall lead another day. “I imagine if he’s motivated by that,” Evans
said. “It depends on what the other teams want to do and if they want
to eliminate him. I think Cancellara has the better chance of making
it than Geraint Thomas, in reality.”

Best regards,

Sean Weide
