A1. In 1965, derailleurs were banned and riders were limited to two gears. The race was won by Dutch first-year professional Gerben Karstens, who chose 53×16 and 53×15. He covered 246 km at a record 45.029 km/h—a speed that would not be surpassed until 1992, when Belgium’s Hendrik Redant won the race. Karstens’ achievement was remarkable given the severe equipment restrictions imposed by the organizers.

A2. The Muro di Sormano has an average gradient of 17% and a maximum of 27%. The climb featured in the Giro di Lombardia from 1960 to 1962, but was removed after complaints that it was so steep riders were falling off or being pushed by fans. It was reintroduced in 2012.

A3. Fausto Coppi won the Giro di Lombardia a record five times: four consecutively from 1946 to 1949, and again in 1954. He finished solo in every victory, attacking on the Madonna del Ghisallo and maintaining his lead to Milan. While no rider (as of the 2024 edition) has matched Coppi’s five total wins, Tadej Pogačar equaled his streak of four consecutive victories (2021–2024) and could potentially surpass him this year.

A4. The youngest men’s road race World Champion was Karel Kaers of Belgium, who won in 1934 at the age of 20 years and 76 days. This record has stood for over 90 years. Jean-Pierre Monseré was the second-youngest winner at 21 years and 342 days in 1970, followed closely by Lance Armstrong, who was 21 years and 345 days when he won in 1993.

A5. Francis Pélissier punctured late in the 1921 Paris–Tours, and with his hands frozen, he tore the tire off the rim with his teeth. He then rode on the bare rim, caught Eugène Christophe, dropped him on the climb out of Azay-le-Rideau, and soloed to the finish. The race—342 km long and contested in blizzard conditions—saw only 8 of 85 starters reach the finish. Pélissier’s act of desperation remains one of cycling’s most heroic moments, symbolizing the brutal conditions and sheer willpower of the sport’s early era.
