A1. Greg Lemond, 1984 Tour de France; Andrew Hampsten, 1986 Tour de France, and Tejay Van Garderen, 2012 Tour de France. No American has won the white jersey at the Giro d’Italia.
A2. It happened in the 2005 Tour de France, but then as a result of testimony in the Armstrong doping investigation, two of those results were removed. Lance Armstrong was 1st, Levi Leipheimer 6th, and Floyd Landis 9th. Today only Landis’ result remains in the record books.
A3. The first was Steve Bauer who earned Bronze in 1984, then Alison Sydor also claimed bronze in the Women’s event in 1991, followed by Linda Jackson’s bronze in 1996. More recently, Michael Woods took a Bronze in the Men’s Road Race in 2018. Interestingly, there were several silvers won by Canadians but those were in the time trial: Anne Samplonius and Clara Hughes in 1994 and 1995 and Svein Tuft in 2008. Of course, Steve Bauer crossed the line second on the road in 1988, only to be relegated but that is a tale for another day!
A4. Frenchman Louison Bobet in 1954, Irishman Stephen Roche in 1987, and American Greg Lemond in 1989.
A5. Fourteen is the Women’s record held by the amazing, ageless Jeannie Longo of France. She has NINE gold medals alone (RR 1985, 1986, 1987, 1989, 1995 and TT 1995, 1996, 1997, 2001). Three silvers (RR 1981, 1993, and TT 2000) and two Bronze (RR 2001 and TT 1994). Incredible!
