Denmark Study Calls for More Research on Bicycle Node Networks

By Charles Pekow — Bicycle node networks haven’t caught on in the United States, but these countrywide or regional sign systems for guiding recreational riders have proven useful in promoting culture, tourism, and economies across Europe. They take a lot of work to construct, and a study of a Danish network finds that researchers have documented little about their effectiveness.

Quality Assessment of a Country-Wide Bicycle Node Network with Loop Census Analysis (https://zenodo.org/records/19390586) calls for more study. Some networks lead to destinations such as parks, scenic overlooks, or railroad stations. Long-range cyclists found the networks more useful than short-range riders, who generally needed an e-bike to take advantage of them. The authors conclude that researchers need to examine factors such as how cyclists reach the network, where to place e-bike charging stations, and traffic safety.
