By Charles Pekow — Shared micromobility continues to grow across the country. The National Association of City Transportation Officials’ annual report on the topic said cities reported 150 million trips last year.
“Ridership continues to grow across every NACTO member city with a shared micromobility system—even as fares rise. E-bikes and scooters are incredibly popular, and pedal bikes remain a vital and affordable option for everyday travel,” NACTO found.

But NACTO warned that growth may not last forever. Most cities have not kept funding and staffing levels high enough to match increased ridership. Continued growth will require more bicycles, e-bikes and scooters, along with better maintenance. Cities will also need to dedicate more staff to micromobility, since many staffers also work on other programs. NACTO also suggested more fare subsidies.
Cities reported that most trips use station-based systems rather than free-standing vehicles.
