    Marketing & Communications Director – Trails Utah

    $25 / hour (contract position)

    Trails Utah ( is seeking a Salt Lake City-based Marketing & Communications Director to join our 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Trails Utah is dedicated to trail advocacy, planning, funding, and construction in needed areas throughout the state. We seek to enhance the quality of life for Utah’s citizens, invigorate local economies, and provide sustainable outdoor recreation for residents and visitors to the state. Providing better access to state-of-the-art trails to Utah communities while safeguarding our landscapes and natural resources is paramount.

    We have a small team of two staff members and several active board members. This self-motivated, creative, and enthusiastic person must have at least three years of marketing and communications experience (management experience preferred). Responsibilities will include developing, carrying out, and overseeing our marketing plan and messaging strategy, managing our membership program, developing content for our website, managing social media, and creating, distributing, and tracking our monthly e-newsletter. This individual must be able to work cheerfully and collaboratively with staff, be present at key functions and events, and regularly report on progress to staff on marketing initiatives, communication strategy, messaging, etc. This role also includes coordinating and overseeing contractors and volunteers focused on graphic design and working on our website. Analytics tracking on the web, social media, and email will also be integral to tracking the reach of the organization and is expected as part of the work product.

    This is a remote position so being self-motivated, organized, and semi-autonomous are musts. You will need to stick to deadlines, collaborate with members of our team to create content, and have strengths in big-picture planning, organization, writing skills, basic graphic design, and more (see “Responsibilities” below).


    • Develop an annual marketing plan and schedule, in coordination with staff
    • Execute marketing & communications efforts in a timely manner
    • Thoroughly vet ideas and initiatives with both Executive Director and Development Director before implementation
    • Oversee marketing contractors & volunteers
      Co-manage membership program with Development Director
    • Research, strategize, schedule, & staff tabling opportunities
    • Coordinate design & printing of promotional materials
    • Create basic graphic design pieces for fliers, stickers, informational material, etc.
    • Manage and grow email list (Mailchimp) – for newsletter & mid-month emails
    • Create and disseminate monthly Trail Talk e-newsletter (Mailchimp)
    • Create and manage social media schedules, imagery, content, and posting
    • Ensure TU website is kept updated, edited, and relevant to projects and current events, advocacy issues, etc.
    • Track quarterly analytics for website, social media, and email list and report findings to staff
    • Develop contacts at press outlets (print, online, TV, radio), write press releases and seek publicity for Trails Utah
    • Expand database of both still and moving imagery for multiple uses
    • Share work progress and upcoming work projects with staff at weekly staff meetings
    • Coordinate with Development Director to identify work and messaging needed to ensure fundraising goals are met
    • Submit detailed accounting of time on specific tasks with invoice each month

    Required Experience / Skills

    • Marketing development, management & oversight
    • Strong writing/grammar skills (messaging, marketing content)
    • Self-starter that can work autonomously
    • Some graphic design skills
    • Knowledge of Google docs
    • Excel / Word documents
    • Mailchimp
    • Social media (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn)


    • Outdoor enthusiast (ideally, a non-motorized trail user!)
    • Familiarity with the outdoor recreation industry
    • Basic understanding of issues relating to recreation and public lands management
    • Experience working in the non-profit world
