Henao Wins Queen Stage; Leipheimer Takes Overall at 2011 Tour of Utah

SNOWBIRD — Levi Leipheimer is your Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah champion — again.

But this time the Radio Shack star had a challenge he didn’t expect and one he hard a hard time overcoming.

With a surprisingly strong Gobernacion de Antioquia team out of Colombia, Leipheimer needed almost every second possible to withstand the challenge by Sergio Henao — who won Stage 5, crossing the line just a wheel in front of Leipheimer.

Leipheimer finished with a scant 23 second advantage over Henao while Radio Shack rider Janez Brajkovic finished third, 43 seconds back.

Henao had six teammates with him when he began the second of three categorized climbs during Stage 5 but was not able to pull away from Leipheimer who marked his closest foe and, with the help of Brajkovic, stayed under control until the climb up Little Cottonwood Canyon began. From there, the former Utahn took advantage of his position and forced Henao to do all the work up the canyon and carefully matched each attack made by the Colombian on the deciding climb.

The win, especially considering the increased competition this year after spending the last few years on the NRC calendar, was appreciated by Leipheimer.

“I am very proud to win the race, especially this year,” Leipheimer said. “It has grown up a lot. It has become a UCI race. I think that today is worthy of what we call a Grand Tour stage in the mountains, like what you see in the Alps, Pyrenees, or Dolomites.”

The challenge from Gobernacion didn’t go unnoticed and Leipheimer was happy to allow Henao the stage win.

“The way the Gobernacion team rode, they were aggressive, they were strong,” Leipheimer said, “and Sergio deserved it more than I did.”

The drama of the race was exceptional. “If we would have scripted this (race) from the outset, with the way it played out – with the stages that were won, the winners of the jerseys, Tejay van Garderen winning the Subaru Best Young Rider jersey, with the leader’s jersey falling into Gobernacion Indeportes Antioquia’s hands early, and Team RadioShack having to fight for it – and handed that script to a screenwriter, I think they would have torn it up and said ‘why don’t you write something realistic’,” said Steve Miller, president of the Tour of Utah at the wrap-up press conference today about the six days of racing at the sixth edition of the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah this week. “(The week) was beyond our wildest dreams. We’re very happy with it.”

The Tour of Utah will be back in 2012.

Park City Point 2 Point Included in National Ultra Endurance Series

PARK CITY, Utah (August 10, 2011) – In its third year, the Park City Point 2 Point (PCP2P), was selected to be a part of the National Ultra Endurance Series (NUE Series). Of the eleven nationwide venues in the 2011 NUE Series, the PCP2P is the only race with a distance shorter than 100 miles. The NUE Series’ endorsement is a salute to PCP2P’s challenging course features, including significant climbs and continuous singletrack. Hundreds of cyclists have anticipated the 2011 PCP2P because of its challenging course design.  A total of 350 cyclists are set to compete in the PCP2P on Saturday, September 3, 2011 over Labor Day Weekend.

The PCP2P is known among bikers as a challenging and true point-to-point race. The 2011 course travels 78 miles and climbs roughly 14,000’ through the Wasatch Mountains without crossing, or using, the same trail twice. The course cuts through the area’s three ski resorts, including Deer Valley Resort and Park City Mountain Resort, and will finish in the Forum at Canyons Resort. Featuring more than 90% singletrack and very few sections for resting, the PCP2P requires athletes to maintain their endurance and focus. “Park City has over 400 miles of trail, which provides us with some incredible options for choosing our course,” said Jay Burke, race director of the PCP2P. “The P2P is merciless. Ups and downs, big miles and technical lines. The course is not for the faint of heart, and that’s exactly why the P2P has attracted some of the most prestigious endurance cyclists from around the country.”

Two-time defending PCP2P champion Alex Grant of the Cannondale Factory Team called the 2010 PCP2P “harder than Leadville” and described the course as “25 miles shorter [than Leadville] but with the same amount of vertical gain and 75 miles more singletrack. There were no road sections for resting, drafting or eating or drinking. [It’s] a pure mountain bike course.” Joining Grant in the 2011 PCP2P are pro endurance cyclists Tinker Juarez, Travis Brown, Josh Tostado, Bryson Perry, Billy Demong (Olympic Gold Medalist), Pua Sawicki, Amanda Carey, and Kelly Boniface.

The 350 slots for Park City’s only endurance mountain bike race filled up in six minutes during registration on February 15, 2011, compared to over four hours in 2010. Because of the overwhelming interest in the solo category over the past three years, the PCP2P duo category has been eliminated indefinitely. A $10,000 cash purse will be awarded to the top seven men and women racers in the Open Male and Open Female divisions.

Regionally, the Pierre’s Hole 100 held on August 6th in Alta, Wyoming was also part of the series.

The Park City Point 2 Point endurance mountain bike race is held annually in Park City, UT over Labor Day weekend and covers 75 miles of the areas 400 plus miles of trails.  Registration opens every year on February 15th at 7PM (www.thepcpp.com).

Inherit the Win

By Tyler Wren — With forty switchbacks of uninterrupted suffering ahead of me and the main peloton five minutes behind, I felt confident in my ability to prevail on the queen stage of the recent Tour of Chile. Concentrating on my rhythm and jeered on by my director from the team car, I struggled and inched my way up the behemoth climb, being careful not to look at the switchbacks above me. The time gap was disappearing just about as quickly as the kilometers-to-go. One minute with three kilometers to go shrunk to ten seconds at the kilometer mark. Marco Arriagada, the race leader and Chilean national hero, passed me in that last kilometer, ending my hail-mary attempt at glory on the day and relegating me to second.

They’re a peculiar enterprise these days, cycling podiums. Cheer for the winner with one hand behind your back as you await the results of the drug control. In this case, the winner of that queen stage Arriagada (he was also the eventual victor of the race overall) tested positive. We were awaiting the results of his B-sample, but recently the news broke that I inherited that stage win.

My enthusiasm over my first international race victory is thus quite tempered by the way in which it was achieved- by default. Marco, it seems, robbed my of a chance to stand atop the podium that day, the satisfaction of struggling up that climb ahead of the field. What comes to mind is the enormous amount of work and sacrifice this endeavor of professional cycle racing demands. Training through Utah winters; juggling college and training; forgoing desserts and larger salaries afforded by more traditional work; interval training in the rain- these are all part of what Marco stole from me.

My outlook on this darker side of our sport has evolved over the last few years. I’ve progressed from cynicism to acceptance. Further, the slimy headlines no longer bring me despair. In fact, they affect me in just the opposite way- I feel more and more confident and happy in my own decisions to race clean. At the end of the day, there will probably be cheaters in most endeavors that I pursue. For me, my happiness and satisfaction comes from the choices I make, not theirs. I’m content with my cycling career, and will be proud of winning that queen stage of Vuelta Chile as a clean athlete. I continue to be fascinated by the nature of our sport- man overcoming the resistance of nature and the determination of his fellow competitors. Doping would obliterate that interest for me, and my pride. I don’t normally like to champion the decision to be a clean athlete- it feels to me a little like bragging about filing your taxes- but in this circumstance, when the victory was allegedly snatched from under my nose, I feel compelled to declare myself so.

For me, there is no positive test that will destroy my interest in the beautiful sport of cycling. For every doping scandal, I also see the story of the honest, hardworking clean athletes struggling in second place or further anonymity. Longfellow penned my favorite of Princeton Cycling’s mottos- “Know how sublime a thing it is to suffer and be strong.” Of all the things dopers rob, they can never take this from me and will never know its true meaning, for of this they have robbed themselves.

Thanks for reading, and train hard now that the sun’s out again.

We’re Weird, That’s For Sure…

By Tyler Wren — I strolled into a Walgreen’s pharmacy with my giant teammate Tom Zirbel late Saturday night ahead of the recent USPRO Championships in Greenville, SC looking for knee-high pantyhose. When the attendant showed us a 40-pack and I told her that that amount would not be sufficient for our needs, I realized with profound clarity that us cyclists and our little schemes for achieving our bests can really look silly to outsiders.

The goal that night in Greenville, as some of you may have guessed, was to procure about 50 short pantyhose and fill them with ice in order to help the entire Jamis/Sutter Home squad cope with the temperatures and humidity levels both predicted to be in the high 90s for the national championships. We wanted to be our best, and part of that was to stay cool, but to the attendant my teammate and I were just a couple of skinny dudes dissatisfied with the paltry pantyhose selection.

The incident that night in Walgreen’s got me thinking about the silliness of other methods that we cyclists seek out in our quest to achieve our best. It’s funny how the night before a race you can spot all the other cyclists in town from a mile away. Often it’s the compression tights peeking out below the shorts (a practice that I do not condone) that give them away. I admit that I use the medical grade ‘granny stockings’ for my compression wear whenever I travel and have spent quite a bit of time consulting pharmacists on this product normally meant for elderly hospital patients with heart troubles.

A few more examples come to mind, as I have spent quite a bit of time with quirky cyclists throughout my career. Whenever I spend time during the summer out West, I seek out cold mountain creeks to sit in (in my chammy) to soak my legs after tough rides, which invariably draws funny looks from passersby. During my tenure at the Princeton Cycling team, a teammate of mine built his own ‘altitude tent,’ designed to boost his red blood cell count and enhance performance. The device consisted of a canister of Nitrogen gas meant to lower the oxygen content of the air he was breathing, and a trash bag to contain that space! The same innovative cyclist measured his lung capacity by inflating old milk cartons while submerged in the bathtub. Thankfully this teammate survived his experiments, but sadly he failed to progress past the ‘B’ field. Since graduating from the collegiate field and moving on to the professional level, I have witnessed a rider using a homemade masochistic hammer-like device to beat the soreness out of his legs, and even a cyclist removing a safety-pin from his jersey and using it to stab away the cramps in his legs- an on the bike self-acupuncture treatment! While waiting for our chartered plane at this year’s Vuelta Chile, the entire peloton was scattered around the terminal with half of the riders inverted, legs climbing the walls in an effort to save their legs for the following stages. There was no mistaking the cyclists for the ordinary travelers that day, that’s for sure. ‘Space Legs,’ wind tunnels, massage sticks, foam rollers, and public displays of stretching and calisthenics are all further examples of the silliness (or, perhaps, genius) that I’ve witnessed as part of our cycling culture.

We’re weird, that’s for sure, but I see all the weirdness as an interesting and endearing consequence of our struggle to ride our bikes as fast as our bodies will allow. Keep searching for the fair competitive advantages, but remember that the biggest one is hard, consistent, intelligent training.

Thanks for reading,

Tyler

Acevedo Wins Stage 4 of the Tour of Utah; Leipheimer retains yellow jersey

SALT LAKE CITY — It was hot and it was hilly.

So naturally the Colombians felt right at home.

Javier Acevedo, riding for the Gobernacion de Antioquia team out of Colombia, smartly placed himself in an early break of nearly 25 riders and worked his way into perfect position to launch a solo attack up the grueling climb of State Street to the Utah State Capitol where he powered away for a five-second victory over Javier Megias and Rubens Bertogliati, both of Team Type 1.

Acevedo, and teamate Sergio Henao who attacked from the chase group on the final lap, chopped out a serious chunk of time from the lead held by Radio Shack’s Levi Leipheimer. Henao jumped back to second overall and now trails Leipheimer by just 23 seconds. Radio Shack’s Janez Brajkovic is 27 seconds back and Gobernacion’s Oscar Sevilla is just 29 seconds off the pace.

“I am extremely happy. It is hard to win a stage anywhere in the world. Today was definitely hard. I am happy I get to race with some of the best riders in the world. Overall, I am very happy,” Acevedo said at the post-race press conference at the Utah State Capitol using a translator.

The race developed with the anticipated breaks on the 11-lap, 7.4 mile circuit around Salt Lake City’s Avenues neighborhood. But the break that ended up working nearly blew the race up.
With 25 riders, the break was able to build a big gap of nearly three minutes on Levi Leipheimer and force the Radio Shack squad to ride out front and work hard to limit the damage done to their race leader.

Leipheimer retained his yellow jersey but will have a slimmer margin of error during Sunday’s Stage 5 from Park City to Snowbird.

Stage winner Acevedo also captured the XO Communications Sprint Leader jersey today. Danny Summerhill (USA) of Team Garmin-Cervelo was awarded the Vivint Most Aggressive Rider jersey. For a fifth consecutive day, Rubens Bertogliati (SUI) of Team Type 1-SANOFI stayed in the snowflake jersey as the Ski Utah King of the Mountain leader. Tejay Van Garderen kept the the Subaru Best Young Rider jersey and Salt Lake City resident Jeff Louder of BMC Racing Team continued for a third day in the Miller Lite Best Utah Rider jersey.

“On the final lap, me and Christian Vandevelde fell off and we got back on to the break on the descent,” commented Bertogliati. “I know the first part of the last kilo was too hard. After 500 meters, it was more suitable for me and I came in third. But I am very happy for my teammate, Javier (Megias Leal), who came in second. He has diabetes; he is the best diabetic rider in the world.”

Racing begins in Park City at 11 a.m. with riders circling Jordanelle Reservoir before hitting the Alpine Loop, Traverse Ridge and then Little Cottonwood Canyon for an epic finish at Snowbird.

Where to Watch Stage 5 of the Tour of Utah

Stage 05 Map PDF

Stage Five presented by Zions Bank-

Start: The signature “Queen stage” of the Tour of Utah is Stage 4 presented by Zions Bank, and it will be worth the travel time to jump around on this course for multiple viewings. Start in Newpark area of Park City.

Mile 10: Blaze ahead of the peloton and watch them crest the first of many climbs today. With Jordanelle as the backdrop, this is one great photo op!

Mile 32: Using the farm roads, get ahead of the caravan again and make your way to the second Hot Spot sprint of the day in Midway where the town will be partying!

Mile 56: Although just about any spot along this scenic byway called Alpine Loop will be wonderful viewing, the KOM is prime viewing and has plenty of parking and a rest room to boot!

Mile 76: The top of Traverse Ridge in Draper will surely draw big crowds and great cycling; expect the top guys to fly over this climb in the big ring!

Mile 87: If you don’t plan to drive to the finish, this little bump in Sandy offers great viewing as well. Park on one of the side streets and set your lawn chair out on Wasatch and listen to the coverage on KFAN and there will be live web cast on the Tour web site.

Mile 91: Don’t believe the sign. Tanner Flat is anything but flat.  This is the steepest section of the climb to Snowbird and has quickly become the favorite viewing spot for the “Tour Fanatic”.  Pack a lunch and fill a cooler, dress in costume and join the fun!!

Finish: Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort is the place to be on Sunday, August 14 if you are a cycling fan. Be sure to head up before 2:00pm or face a closed road!

Rebecca Rusch and Todd Wells Win 2011 Leadville Trail 100 MTB; Utah’ Alex Grant takes 3rd

Three-time women’s champion Rusch breaks own course record by 16 minutes; Wells second fastest in race history

LEADVILLE, Colo. (Aug. 13, 2011) –  Rebecca Rusch and Todd Wells conquered more than 100 miles of challenging Colorado Rockies terrain and elevations ranging from 9,000 to 12,612 feet to take top honors at this year’s Leadville Trail 100 MTB. Nearly 2,000 riders from 50 states and 21 countries descended upon Leadville, Colo. to take on the country’s most prestigious ultra-distance mountain bike race.

Competing against a stellar field of some of the country’s best mountain bikers on the 103-mile course, Rebecca Rusch (Ketchum, Idaho) won the women’s division at 7:31:45, shattering the previous women’s record she set last year by more than 16 minutes. She’s the only woman in Leadville Trail 100 MTB to win three times.

Todd Wells (Durango, Colo.) won the men’s division at 6:23:38, just seven minutes shy of last year’s record of 6:16:37, set by Levi Leipheimer. Wells’ time is the men’s second fastest finish in course history. Alex Grant (Salt Lake City, UT) finished third, at 6:35:32.

The women’s division was the most competitive in recent history and saw Gretchen Reeves (Avon, Colo.) finishing second at 7:35:38 and Pua Mata (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) finishing third at 7:37:50. Both women also broke last year’s record set by Rusch. In the men’s division, Alban Lakata (Lienz, Austria) finished second at 6:27:57, and Alex Grant (Salt Lake City, Utah) finished third at 6:35:32.

“From the moment Ken Chlouber electrified the field today with his words of inspiration at the pre-race meeting until the start of the race, we felt we had the deepest field in the event’s history,” said Scott Giffin, Leadville Race Director. “The athletes did not disappoint at any level once the gun went off.  It was a magnificent day for all aspects of Leadville.”

The renowned Leadville Trail 100 MTB is the original ultra-distance mountain bike event, beginning and ending in the heart of Leadville, Colo., located west of Denver. Since 1994, the Leadville Trail 100 has been attracting thousands of racers to the Colorado community. For all Leadville race results and more information, visit www.leadvilleraceseries.com.

Van Garderen Tops Time Trial; Leipheimer Vaults into Yellow in Stage 3 of the Tour of Utah

TOOELE — Tejay Van Garderen has been waiting for this day since he signed with a Pro Tour team.

The rising star with the HTC-Highroad team finally, after countless close calls, picked up a victory in a professional race after a stellar junior career and it couldn’t have come on a better day — his 23rd birthday.

By posting the fastest time of the day during the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah’s stage 3 time trial, Van Garderen gave himself, and his team, a sweet birthday gift. Van Garderen’s time over the 15.6 km course at Miller Motorsports Park of 17:33 was six seconds better than that of Levi Leipheimer.

“I had more motivation today for sure.  It’s my birthday, and my fiancé was in the car. It’s something I wanted for a long time (a stage win).  With HTC-Highroad over at the end of the year, I really wanted to repay them with a victory,” Van Garderen said about his victory today.  “I knew how to take the corners.  The course was a little windy and I knew where the wind was coming from.  I was taking advice from Allan Peiper (directeur sportif of HTCHighroad) in the team car as well.  He told me to start hard and find your pace.”

The Radio Shack rider wasn’t terribly disappointed in the result, however. Though a stage win would have been preferred, Leipheimer’s second-place effort gave him the race leader’s yellow jersey and created a healthy bit of separation between himself and his closest competitors.

“You have to capitalize on the time trial. I know that’s what I had to do today and cut as much time as I could into Oscar (Sevilla) and (Sergio) Henao, because those two, and their team (Gobernacion Indeportes Antioquia), will be very aggressive and they’ll be hard to control. I need every second that I can get these next two days,” said Leipheimer, who won the Tour de Suisse earlier this summer.

Commenting on the tour, he said, “It’s even better than last year.” “It’s great to be at the Tour of Utah and to see this race come of age. I went to high school here and I have a lot of fond memories of being in Utah. And it’s great to see the healthy communities that embrace this race.”

Entering the day trailing Sergio Henao by 13 seconds, Leipheimer used his time trialing expertise to leap past not only Henao, but his Gobernacion de Antioquia teammate Oscar Sevilla. Leipheimer now enjoys a 27 second lead over fellow Radio Shack rider Janez Brajkovic while Seville sits 29 seconds back and Henao is now 56 seconds off the pace. Van Garderen moved up to sixth overall at 2:27 back.

Saturday’s Stage 4 will be a rugged 11-lap ride through the streets of Salt Lake City’s Avenues, Capitol Hill and University.

SALT LAKE CITY – Mayor Ralph Becker, Visit Salt Lake and the 2011 Tour of Utah Local Organizing Committee is pleased to invite the public to a Community ViewingFestival on Saturday, August 13 from noon-5 p.m. at downtown’s Reservoir Park.

Over 100 of the world’s best cyclists are in Utah this week competing for the championship title of “America’s Toughest Stage Race” and will be blazing down the streets of Salt Lake City Saturday on the Tour’s Stage 4 circuit course.

Join the Mayor at Reservoir Park where you will be able to see the racers twice on each of the 11 laps on the 7.4 mile course that starts and finishes at the Capitol and winds through the Avenues, University neighborhoods and downtown. Moment-by-moment live race coverage will also be available at a big screen viewing area at the park. Food, beverages, bicycle valet service and activities will make for a fun and family-friendly afternoon watching world-class athletic competition.

Organizers encourage participants to bike, walk or use public transportation to get to the park, where parking and automobile access will be limited. For those who need to drive, parking lots on the University of Utah campus near 100 South and North Campus will be open and free to the public on race day. Cars may not park on the course on Saturday and rolling closures will create some traffic delays in and around the course area. For more details, see our event page <http://www.slcgov.com/TOU/default.htm>here. (<http://www.slcgov.com/TOU/default.htm>http://www.slcgov.com/TOU/)

Bauer Wins Super Fast Stage 2 of the 2011 Tour of Utah

PROVO — It was hot and boy, was it ever fast.

Stage 2 of the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah saw temperatures in the mid-90s and a pace that also set the asphalt on fire as Jack Bauer of the Endura Racing team pulled away down the final few hundred meters for the win.

Bauer’s victory came as he and the peloton chased down a solo attack from HTC-Highroad’s Tejay Van Garderen over the final 5k of the race and a pair of crashes threatened to send the race leaders out of contention.

Gobernacion de Antioquia’s Sergia Henao managed to hold on to his overall lead and the yellow jersey after he was involved in a crash with about 5k to race. Levi Leipheimer, just 13 seconds behind Henao in the race for the yellow jersey, suffered a flat tire within the final mile or two but was able to keep himself upright through a pair of 90-degree turns in heavy traffic. Both finished in the main pack and were awarded the same time, keeping the race tight among the five riders still in contention.

Bauer’s win was a result of his team coming to the front in an effort to chase down Van Garderen. That effort left Endura in best position to maneuver through the sharp turns. When Bauer looked to his side and found himself alone off the front of the peloton he buried his head and held everyone off. Liquigas’ Elia Viviani was second and United Healthcare’s Jake Keough rounded out the state podium.

“For all of us as a team, it’s been bit of an experiment to see how we form up in the mountains and high altitude. Obviously a stage win was a goal so to do it so early in the tour and on a sprint stage is awesome.  I’ve never raced at altitude before and especially yesterday’s stage and the prologue that was a whole new thing for me,” said Bauer, who won today’s stage in Provo near the recognizable landmarks of Brigham Young University and Mount Timpanogos on the Wasatch Mountain Range. “Obviously a win was a goal, but to get one so early in the tour – especially on a sprint day – was exciting.”

Jeff Louder, BMC Pro Cycling, took of the Best Utah Rider jersey after Tyler Wren, Jamis-Sutter Home, was involved in the crash and lost 30 seconds on the way into the finish because his wheel was bent.

The winners rode the 99.2-mile (159.6 km) rolling course around Utah Lake in 3 hours and 33 minutes, averaging 27.8 miles per hour.

The race now turns to Miller Motorsports Park where riders will try their hand in the race of truth. The 9-mile individual time trial will likely shuffled the order of the top five and probably put the yellow jersey on the shoulders of Leipheimer, one of the strongest time trialists in the world.

Anthony takes Stage 1 of the 2011 Tour of Utah with Gutsy Move; Henao Retains Yellow

OGDEN — Just as the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah’s action heated up, it might be over.

A rapid ascent of the North Ogden Pass by Levi Leipheimer and three other strong contenders — including race leader Sergio Henao – shattered the field and resulted in a five-man break over the final 24 miles of Stage 2 that left Henao still in yellow, but effectively turned the Tour of Utah into a five-man race.

Henao (Gobernacion de Antioquia) retained his yellow jersey while teammate Oscar Sevilla remains in second with Leipheimer jumping to third.

The drama was all Leipheimer and Henao – with Sevilla and Radio Shack’s Janez Brajkovic playing strong supportive roles – but the thrill of victory belonged to Kelly Benefit Strategies/OptumHealth’s Jesse Anthony.

After a group of four riders dangled off the front for nearly two laps of the race, Anthony launched a solo attack from the field and bridge a gap that had grown to as large at six minutes. As he picked off the tiring breakaway riders, he found himself alone in the lead as he climbed the North Ogden Pass for the third time.

Behind him, however, Leipheimer decided to test his legs just a little bit and in the process discovered he was ready to give it a serious effort as he saw the pain on the faces and body language of those he passed. Anthony hit the summit first but Leipheimer, Henao, Brajkovic and Sevilla were close behind. When the group hit the bottom, they teamed up in a perfectly rotating pursuit that opened up a gap that grew to 2:35 at the finish line and left the chasing peloton in a shambles.

Anthony, having worked hard enough to earn the Most Aggressive Rider jersey, was allowed to sit on the wheel of his four partners in the break and recover after his long solo effort. That development allowed him to sneak past his fellow breakaway riders for a relatively easy sprint win — one that he called the biggest of his career.

“I’m very happy to be in front… I did not plan to go alone. Call it stupid, but it worked out. This race is wide open. It is not called the ‘toughest stage race’ for nothing,” said Anthony, who won the G.C. earlier this year at Nature Valley Grand Prix.

For now, Anthony sits in a group of five riders that have by far the best chance to win the Tour of Utah. He admits he’s not the best of climbers, but will do his best to limit damages and hold on to the sprinter’s points jersey.

In addition to the stage win, Anthony captured the XO Communications Sprint classification jersey.  The Ski Utah King of the Mountain classification jersey will be worn for the first time this week by Ruben Bertogliati (SUI) of Team Type 1-SANOFI.  For a second day, Tejay van Garderen (USA) HTC-Highroad secured the Subaru Best Young Rider Jersey and Tyler Wren (USA) of Jamis-Sutter Home earned the Miller Lite Best Utah Rider Jersey.  Jay Thompson (RSA) of Bissell Pro Cycling was awarded the Vivint Most Aggressive Rider jersey for initiating the first break of the day on the 11-mile climb up North Ogden Pass.

“The (Best Utah Rider) jersey is obviously a real bonus this week. It is the only race of the year where I can win a jersey like this,” said Wren, who resides in Salt Lake City. “This race really suits my strengths. I’ve been doing this race for awhile and the level of competition here has obviously grown and this jersey has certainly been a goal.”

Henao still leads the race, holding a seven second lead over Sevilla and 13 seconds ahead of Leipheimer. After Anthony (18 seconds) and Brajcovic (21 seconds), the nearest competitor in the main field in RealCyclist.com’s Francisco Mancebo all the way back at 2:43.

With only one legitimate climbing stage left, the Tour of Utah’s drama will be tempered in the general classification. But there will be plenty of action before Sunday’s queen stage, beginning with Thursday’s sprinters stage around Utah Lake from Lehi to Provo.
