By Charles Pekow — New and improved bicycle access could come to Salt Lake County, Utah, with the Big Cottonwood Canyon Project as soon as fall 2028. The Federal Highway Administration and Utah Department of Transportation gave final approval to proposed transportation improvements along SR-190. The project will move forward unless someone sues to stop it by October 13.

The project will include a multi-use path along Wasatch Boulevard/SR-190 between Fort Union Boulevard and the Little Cottonwood Canyon park-and-ride lot. It also calls for another path along Fort Union Boulevard from Wasatch Boulevard to 700 East, as well as a grade-separated bicycle crossing across Wasatch Boulevard south of the entrance to Big Cottonwood Canyon.

Existing bicycle facilities in the area, however, may close during construction. These include bike lanes on Wasatch Boulevard between Millrock Drive and the entrance to Big Cottonwood Canyon, as well as the Big Cottonwood Canyon Trail. Some canyon roads used by cyclists may also be affected. UDOT says it will provide detours for cyclists.
