By Charles Pekow — If you commute to work, you’d save $13,600 a year if you do it by e-bike instead of car. At least if you live in Los Angeles, a study calculates. “LA commuters spend roughly $15,100 per year driving vs $1,500 commuting by e-bike,” says the study done by LA writer and Cycling West contributor Peter Flax.
Car vs E-Bike Commuting Costs in Los Angeles: A Comparative Analysis of Car Ownership and E-bike Commuting says “Parking alone, at roughly $3,314 per year, can exceed the full annual cost of e-bike commuting in some scenarios and substantially exceeds the annual charging cost many times over.”

The cost of charging an e-bike for a year would amount to less than a single tank of gas, it says – and it was written before the current surge in gas prices.
