SISTERON, France (August 8, 2026) — What looked like a Classic on paper turned into one of the most memorable stages of the 2026 Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift.
The 171.9-kilometer ride from Sisteron to Nice appeared relatively benign for most of the day, but the final 20 kilometers transformed the race. Two categorized climbs and a short, brutally steep uphill finish created the perfect launchpad for the general classification contenders.
Demi Vollering and her FDJ United-Suez teammates took full advantage.
With the pace exploding on the final climb, Vollering delivered a devastating acceleration that finally cracked Elisa Longo Borghini of UAE Team L’Imad and yellow jersey Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney of Canyon//SRAM. Vollering then raced alone toward the Mediterranean and the finish on Nice’s Promenade des Anglais, taking the stage victory and, more importantly, the yellow jersey.
Vollering finished eight seconds ahead of Niewiadoma-Phinney and 1 minute, 12 seconds ahead of Marlen Reusser of Movistar Team with one stage remaining. The result set up a dramatic finale Sunday, when four ascents of the Col d’Èze would decide the 2026 Tour.
Adegeest and Squiban go clear
A total of 126 riders started Stage 8 at 2:02 p.m. CEST. The longest stage of the race covered 171.9 kilometers from Sisteron to Nice, with two Category 4 climbs late in the route providing attackers with a chance to spoil what otherwise looked like a likely sprint.
There was one nonstarter: defending champion Pauline Ferrand-Prévot of Visma | Lease a Bike.
Bright sunshine greeted the peloton in Sisteron, and the racing was aggressive almost from the start. Visma | Lease a Bike was particularly active, repeatedly trying to put riders into the break.
It took 27 kilometers for the decisive move to form. Maëva Squiban of UAE Team L’Imad and Loes Adegeest of Lidl-Trek escaped together and quickly established themselves as the strongest breakaway of the day.
Several riders tried to bridge across, but none succeeded. Morgane Coston of Ma Petite Entreprise spent nearly 25 kilometers in no man’s land between the leaders and the peloton before eventually being caught.
Adegeest took the first categorized climb, the Category 4 Col des Robines at kilometer 61. The breakaway’s advantage reached 6 minutes there.
Squiban was first over the Col de Toutes Aures at kilometer 76.5, although the gap had fallen to 5:45 as SD Worx-Protime, AG Insurance-Soudal and Liv-AlUla-Jayco organized the chase.
The attackers regained some ground on the descent, stretching their advantage to 6:15, the largest gap of the day.
The chase heats up
FDJ United-Suez eventually joined the pursuit, bringing the gap down to 5:25 at the intermediate sprint in Puget-Théniers at kilometer 105.7. Adegeest took the sprint.
With 20 kilometers remaining, the advantage had fallen to 1:40. EF Education-Oatly then added riders to the chase as the peloton began to reel in the break.
Canyon//SRAM moved to the front on the Côte de Colomars, the final categorized climb before the decisive finale. Squiban reached the summit first but crashed on the descent, leaving Adegeest alone at the front.
Her solo effort lasted until 9 kilometers remained. The peloton finally caught her, although she earned the combativity award for her long day at the front.
Vollering makes her move
The real fireworks began on the Côte de la Ginestière.
FDJ United-Suez drove the pace with Franziska Koch, Juliette Berthet and Célia Gery, shredding the peloton until only about a dozen riders remained capable of matching the tempo.
Then came the wall.
After a quick 1.4-kilometer descent, the riders hit a 500-meter uphill ramp that averaged 13% and included sections reaching 16%. It was short, steep and perfectly suited to Vollering.
The Dutch rider launched her attack.
Longo Borghini and Niewiadoma-Phinney tried to respond, but the acceleration was too much. The Italian champion managed to stay closest while Niewiadoma-Phinney began to struggle.
As the three riders crested the climb, Vollering had opened just enough of a gap to put the yellow jersey within reach.
Longo Borghini did most of the chasing, with Niewiadoma-Phinney struggling behind her. But Vollering was already on her way to Nice.
The Dutch rider extended her advantage on the run to the Promenade des Anglais and crossed the finish line alone, securing the stage victory and taking the yellow jersey by eight seconds.
A group of the remaining general classification contenders, led by Kim Le Court-Pienaar of AG Insurance-Soudal, finished 38 seconds behind.
After losing substantial time on the Mont Ventoux stage, Vollering had turned the race upside down in a matter of minutes.
Now she had one final challenge: defend an eight-second lead over Niewiadoma-Phinney on Sunday, with four trips up the Col d’Èze standing between her and the Tour de France Femmes title.
Vollering commented on her win:
“We just needed to do it. In a stage race, you live day by day. You may be disappointed at night, but the next morning you have to wake up with new energy and have a go again. You make a plan with the team and go all the way. It’s funny but only this morning I had a déjà-vu during the meeting from a recon I did in January, and I saw myself taking the Yellow Jersey. It didn’t make sense in my eyes, so I forgot about it. It was weird. Then this morning the déjà-vu came to me and I thought it might come true, that maybe that’s the way things should be. During the day, I tried to remind myself I could do it, that we could do it. That we should at least try, and dig deep. I was in so much pain… I can hardly describe it, but I made it happen. This goes to prove that if you really believe in something, if you dream big, it doesn’t matter how much risk you take, or how much pain you have to go through… You will make it happen. You just need the right people around you.”
“Tomorrow’s course is going to be super hard. We know it from the beginning of the Tour. Anything can happen, but anyway I’m in Yellow going into this final day after winning two stages. That’s already super special and we are going to try everything to keep this Yellow Jersey tomorrow. I believe my team already proved it today.”
